Great turnout for DCC AGM 2025

Sept. 25, 2025 (Calgary, AB) – Over 60 shareholders attended the first Annual General Meeting at the Danish Canadian Club’s new home this week, with most taking part in the pork roast dinner special prior to the meeting.

The main business at the meeting included:

  • the approval of the minutes from the last AGM as well as the minutes of the extraordinary meeting in March 2025;

  • the approval of the financial statements for the last fiscal year and the appointment of the auditor;

  • election of the new board;

  • a motion to reduce the board size: “to reduce the minimum amount of directors on the board from seven (7) to five (5) and to reduce the maximum from 13 to nine (9)”.

All motions were carried.

As well, the Danish Canadian Museum gave a presentation about their planned capital project and asked the shareholders to consider making a significant donation towards the fund that would then be matched by the government. The shareholders voted to have the board look into the feasibility of this and prepare a proposal to bring back to them in early 2026.

The Board of Directors is: Per Andersen (president, 1yr term), Wes Meyer, Jan Sørensen, Kirsten Hansen, Peter Berg, Vaughn Schuler, Jan Elver Olsen, and Annemarie Pedersen (Manager of Operations).

The Main Hall at the Austrian Canadian Club hosted both the shareholder dinner and the AGM, with the pork roast being the last of  September’s grand opening specials. Because of the success of this evening, the board will look at offering dinner specials before general meetings in the future.

THE DANISH CANADIAN CLUB SHAREHOLDERS’ HISTORIC VOTE

This week shareholders of the Danish Canadian Club (DCC) met to vote on the most important change for the Club in over 60 years – the last being the purchase of the building on 11th Avenue.

“This is a significant milestone in the history of our organization. We are looking for ways to create a future for the Club,” said Wes Meyer, Vice President of the DCC to a packed hall Wednesday evening.

In an almost unanimous vote, over 100 shareholders voted in favour of the resolution to relocate the Mermaid Inn after the current building closes May 31, 2025; there were eight votes against.

The new location will be the dining room in the Austrian Canadian Cultural Centre (ACCC) at 3112–11 Street NE, Calgary. At the Austrian Centre there will be a DCC sign and a Danish flag outside the building, Mermaid Inn signage over the door to the dining room, and the room will be decorated with furniture and décor from the current Inn. There will be Danish food items added to the menu and opportunities to host Danish events in the building throughout the year.

The big change will be that the DCC will no longer in the business of running a restaurant. All restaurant business will be run through the ACCC. The current agreement with the ACCC is for one year, with regular reviews between both groups throughout the year to ensure it is meeting everyone’s needs.“

There are many events planned to celebrate the Danish Club, including final events at our current location and special events after we have moved into our new home,” said Meyer.

Details will be shared through our email newsletter and Facebook page. Sign up and follow so you don’t miss a thing.

The Board of Directors thanks everyone who attended the meeting for their thoughtful discussion and questions, and their overwhelming support.
